Problem
The number of young people experiencing depression and anxiety is higher than ever. How can music be used to help them cope with negative feelings?
At the same time, for people living with dementia, listening to music from their past can evoke vivid memories, restore sense of self, elevate mood, foster socialisation and reducing agitation. However, a key barrier to explore the power of music for people with dementia is to know which music is meaningful for different individuals. Unfortunately, this is a difficult task for people living with dementia that are not able to intentionally recall the music they used to listen to in their youth, and this information may also not be known to their families and caregivers.
Solution
Music is already a big part of how many young people relax, cope with stress, and manage their emotions. MUSIC.ME is a free digital tool developed by researchers at the University of Liverpool to help young people use music more intentionally to support their wellbeing – whether they are feeling stressed, overwhelmed, anxious, low, or simply want to better understand how music affects their mood.
MUSIC.ME also serves as a music recommendation system that that allows people to discover music that was popular in their youth in the country where they grew up. This can help people living with dementia rediscover music from their past.
