  • Problem

The Avoidable Deaths Network (ADN) is a diverse, dynamic, inclusive and innovative global membership network dedicated to avoiding human deaths from natural hazards, naturally triggered technological hazards and human-made disasters in low- and middle-income countries.

    Solution

The Avoidable Deaths Network actively contributes towards the following areas:

    1. Fostering trans-disciplinary ideas, partnerships and solutions to reduce avoidable disaster deaths and people affected by disasters for sustainable development in low-and middle-income countries, through knowledge exchange events (conferences, symposiums and webinars).
    2. Raising visibility and awareness of the Sendai Framework’s first two targets, through publications, and knowledge exchange events.
    3. Developing capacities of disaster responders and other stakeholders.
    4. Developing lifesaving tools, kits, interventions, innovative technologies, governance models and theories to reduce the burden of maternal mortality, snakebite mortality, drowning mortality during disasters, and tsunami mortality.
    5. Strengthening connections between disaster responders, through leveraging existing and promoting novel networking platforms.
    6. Nurturing future leaders for Avoidable Deaths and improve their leadership and employability skills.
    7. Publishing Newsletter and Bulletins for knowledge exchange; and
    8. Actively soliciting and securing private and public funds to promote the above activities.

Sexual misconduct by staff is under-reported and under-researched. Higher education institutions in the UK need to be leading the change to prevent cultures of abuse, respond effectively and without inflicting further harm, ensure robust, student-centred reporting and investigation procedures, and implement policies and procedures to eliminate the sexual misconduct of academic, professional services, contracted and temporary staff.
