The 1928 Institute
The University of Oxford
Problem
The 1928 Institute targets a lack of representation, systemic data gaps, and under-addressed discrimination facing the British Indian community.
Solution
We are a University of Oxford spin-out designed to:
- Research and represent British Indians: We conduct empirical research, impactful events, and critical briefings aimed at policy-makers.
- Contribute to the UK-India Relationship: Our group provides the Secretariat for the All-Party Parliamentary Group on India.
- Be a platform for dialogue and to disrupt echo-chambers: We work with our diverse member network to promote dialogue and debate.
We offer community services specialising in novel and pivotal research, promoting solidarity, and heritage preservation. We also offer consulting in navigating the UK-India relationship and understanding the British Indian community.
Sustainable Development Goals addressed
Some facts:
- 76% of British Indians face barriers accessing mental healthcare (British Indian Census Survey, 2020). We are working with the NHS to propose how their mental health services can be improved for the British Indian community and beyond.
- Only 8% of British Indians feel accurately represented in the UK Media, and only 6% feel that India is accurately represented in the media (British Indian Census Survey, 2025).
- Only 6% of British Indians feel accurately represented by policy makers (British Indian Census Survey, 2025).
